Jacob Sargent
Jacob grew up on Bainbridge Island; a short ferry ride from Seattle, WA. Here he fell in love with the outdoors and the natural sciences. He earned a B.S. in physics with an option in biophysics from Rice University and had an independent research project under Dr. Ching-Hwa Kiang doing single molecule protein pulling experiments with AFM. After graduating from Rice, Jacob followed his passion for teaching and worked as a high school science teacher, coach and dorm parent for four years at Woodberry Forest and Hyde Schools. It was during this time that he rediscovered his interest in single-molecule biophysics and found a new passion for medicine. This drove him enter the Harvard-MIT division of Health Sciences and Technology pursuing a PhD in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics. He is now a member of the Loparo Lab working towards creating a single molecule assay for a highly conserved DNA repair pathway (base excision repair). Outside of the lab Jacob enjoys running, cycling, ultimate, rock-climbing, hiking, skiing, dancing, and baking... a long list to which he loves to add things.
